Business as Mission: The Maria Naomi Story
In 1999, as Romania was emerging from the shadows of Communism, God placed a simple yet profound prayer on my heart: "Lord, I don’t want to say no to the needs around us." This prayer became the foundation of a ministry that would transform not just my life, but the lives of countless families in the rural villages of Southern Romania.
When I first answered the Lord’s call, I began my work with orphans, leading Bible studies, and sharing the Gospel in underserved communities. I witnessed firsthand the struggles of these villages—both spiritual and practical. For many, faith was a tradition rather than a relationship, and economic hardships left families without hope for a better future. Yet, despite opposition and challenges, I saw God move.
In 2008, my husband Mark and I founded Maria Naomi to meet the overwhelming needs of the people we served. We wanted to address both their spiritual and practical struggles in a way that would bring lasting transformation. What began with outreach events and Bible studies soon grew into something much larger—a mission to equip and empower.
A Turning Point: From Charity to Opportunity
Over time, I realized that while charity meets immediate needs, it often creates dependency. One woman’s words stuck with me: "If God loves me, why don’t I have food for my children?" I knew that providing groceries wasn’t enough. What these women needed was an opportunity—something that would allow them to stand on their own feet with dignity and purpose.
In 2014, through God’s provision and the generosity of donors, we purchased a property in the heart of the community. This property became Nehemiah House—a space for ministry, community, and what would eventually grow into our sewing workshop.
The workshop started as a humble effort to teach a few women how to sew, creating handmade goods to sell. From the beginning, it was vital to me that this was not seen as charity. The women earn fair wages and work in a professional, supportive environment. They know their income comes from the quality of their work, not from donations. This preserves their dignity and allows them to take pride in what they do.
Empowering Women Through Dignity and Faith
The workshop has grown into a vibrant center for skill development, community, and faith. The artisans learn everything from sewing techniques and machine operation to inventory management and order processing. These skills not only empower them to create beautiful, high-quality products but also prepare them for opportunities beyond the workshop.
But the workshop is about more than just practical skills. It’s a place where faith is lived out daily. Through encouragement, prayer, and Bible studies, we’ve created an environment where women can grow spiritually and personally. While faith is never a requirement, many artisans have chosen to explore their relationship with God because of the love and care they experience here.
Building Stronger Families and Communities
Today, Maria Naomi’s impact reaches far beyond the workshop. Women’s Bible studies, children’s programs, and evangelistic events are creating spaces where entire families can experience God’s love. Children are hearing the Gospel through camps and community events. Women are finding hope and purpose in their work. And through it all, we’re building Christ-centered communities that can flourish for generations.
One of the greatest joys of this journey has been witnessing the transformation of these women—not as charity cases, but as skilled artisans and confident individuals who are providing for their families and contributing to their communities. Their work fuels local economies, preserves cultural craftsmanship, and reflects the creativity of our Creator.
