The Gospel at Work in Our Artisan Workshop: Part One

By Florina Darvell

Finding Hope and Purpose in the Workshop

In Southern Romania, where economic opportunities are scarce, women often face challenges that seem insurmountable. At Maria Naomi’s Workshop, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing how meaningful work and a supportive environment can transform lives. Let me share a few stories that illustrate how God has used this ministry to restore dignity and purpose.

One of the first women to join our workshop came to me in desperation. Her husband had left to work in Germany, leaving her alone to care for their two daughters with no income. At the time, I didn’t have work to offer her, and it broke my heart. I prayed for a way to say “yes” to her. With no immediate solutions, I decided to teach her basic skills like crocheting and tatting. To my amazement, she returned the next day with a beautifully crafted necklace, ready for payment.

Her determination inspired me to give her more tasks, and later, I learned she could sew. Though hesitant at first, she worked tirelessly to overcome her insecurities, and her hands, which once trembled with fear, began to create beautiful, intricate garments. Over time, she became one of the most skilled artisans in the workshop, encouraging others and fostering a sense of joy and camaraderie.

Her story is one of resilience and transformation. Despite her circumstances, she grew confident and self-reliant. For six years, she worked with us, finding not just a job but a supportive community that lifted her up. Her income allowed her to provide for her family and see her daughter graduate from university—an accomplishment that brought us all immense joy.

Another young woman came to us while still in high school. As the sole provider for her family, she faced incredible pressure, with their only income being a modest child benefit. She joined the workshop and found stability during a challenging time. Even when her husband later fell ill and could no longer work, her position at the workshop provided the steady income her family desperately needed.

These stories reflect the heart of the workshop: offering more than just employment. We provide an environment where women can grow in confidence, develop marketable skills, and experience the love of God in tangible ways.
