What Began with a Prayer: The Maria Naomi Story
By Florina Darvell
The story of Maria Naomi’s workshop began with a prayer and a deep desire to meet the needs of the women in our community. I realized early in my ministry that charity, while helpful in the moment, often created dependency rather than growth. God opened my eyes to see that simply giving groceries wasn’t enough. What these women needed was an opportunity—one that would allow them to provide for their families, develop their skills, and find dignity in meaningful work.
A Workshop Built on Dignity and Excellence
When the workshop began, my goal was clear: to create jobs that offered more than just a paycheck. I wanted the women to see themselves as skilled artisans, contributing to something larger than themselves. Their work needed to be valuable, marketable, and excellent. That’s why our products—from handmade clothing to textiles—are crafted with care and precision, designed to meet high standards that people want to buy for their quality, not out of pity.
One of the first women I hired made it clear she wasn’t looking to change her religion—she just needed a job. I respected that honesty and realized how important it was to create an environment where faith wasn’t a condition of employment. Instead, I focused on building trust, showing fairness, and sharing God’s love through my actions. Over time, some of the women began attending events or Bible studies, but always because they wanted to, not because they felt pressured.
I’ve also been intentional about making sure the women know their wages come from their hard work, not from charity or donations. This preserves their dignity and helps them take pride in what they do. They’re not here because of someone’s mercy—they’re here because of their skills and effort.
Faith in Action
The workshop is a way for me to live out the Gospel in daily life. When I say, “God loves you” or “God cares for you,” I can show it through practical actions. One woman once told me, “If God loves me, why don’t I have food for my children?” That question stuck with me. Providing her with a job was the answer—not just for her immediate needs but for her long-term growth.
Faith is woven into every aspect of the workshop, not by force but by example. I try to be attentive to the women’s needs, showing care and compassion in the way I lead. They see the Gospel in how we operate as a business—paying our taxes on time, contributing to the local economy, and running debt-free. This has built a positive reputation in the community and strengthened our witness.
Building Stronger Communities
The workshop’s impact extends far beyond our walls. It’s not just about creating jobs—it’s about changing lives. These women are breaking cycles of poverty, supporting their families, and finding purpose in their work. And as they grow, the entire community benefits.
Every time I see an artisan proudly share what she’s made, I’m reminded of how far we’ve come. What began as a simple idea has flourished into something that gives hope and opportunity—not just for today but for generations to come.
Join Us in This Mission
I can’t do this alone. The workshop and all that Maria Naomi accomplishes are the result of many people coming together with a shared vision. If this story resonates with you, I invite you to be part of it. Whether as a donor or a volunteer, your support allows us to continue this life-changing work.
Together, we can empower more women, strengthen families, and share the love of Christ in a tangible way.
