Short-Term Missions: Join us in Romania in 2025
By Cindy Medema
When I first arrived in Southern Romania in 2009, I did not expect was how deeply God would change my life. Seeing first-hand the depth of poverty was a jarring experience, but it was in that setting that the beauty of the Gospel shone so brightly. Through ministry and my new friendship with Florina Darvell that short-term mission trip started many, many returning short-term trips over the next decade.
As I joined Florina and the work at Maria Naomi, ministering to local families and ladies, Florina shared a remarkable vision that began with something simple: yarn. Sparked by a large donation, the Lord inspired Florina to open a workshop where local women could learn to make and sell hand-crafted goods, providing them with dignified work and hope for a better future.
Our family began making annual trips to support the Darvells’ ministry. Over the last fifteen years, we have seen Florina’s vision unfold miraculously. Today, the Maria Naomi workshop has employed seventeen local women. Each of these women has heard the Gospel, and many now begin their workday immersed in Scripture and prayer.
If you’ve ever felt God nudging you toward missions, now is the time to take a step. Over the years, Nehemiah House—the on-site mission house—has hosted 80+ short-term teams and volunteers from more than eight countries. Each visitor has brought their unique skills and heart for service, playing a role in empowering women, strengthening families, and proclaiming the Gospel. If you feel a stirring to serve the Lord in Southern Romania, there is a place for you at Maria Naomi.
What You’ll Experience at Maria Naomi
When you visit Maria Naomi, you’ll most likely stay at Nehemiah House, a two-story home designed to host mission teams, families, and individuals. But Nehemiah House is more than just a place to rest; it’s a center of purpose and community. Volunteers come together here to share meals, worship, and partner in God’s work. Whether you’re stepping into missions for the first time or you’re a seasoned traveler, you’ll find your place here.
Opportunities to Serve
Here are just a few ways you can make a difference during your visit:
• The Artisan Workshop
Work alongside our talented artisans as they create handmade clothing and goods. Whether you’re helping with production, assisting with marketing, or simply learning about the creative process, your support will empower womenthrough meaningful, dignified work.
• Community Outreach
Join us for home visits, where we pray with families, share the Gospel, and offer practical help. These visits often build deeper, lasting relationships and create opportunities for ongoing discipleship.
• Children’s Ministry
Bring joy to the youngest members of the village by leading Bible stories, games, and activities. Special events—like summer camps and Christmas celebrations—provide incredible moments to sow seeds of faith in young hearts.
• Evangelism and Discipleship
Participate in Bible studies or help organize women’s events that encourage meaningful conversations. These gatherings are often the first steps for women exploring faith in Christ.
Why Maria Naomi?
Southern Romania faces significant economic challenges, especially in rural villages where opportunities are scarce. Many women are forced to leave their families to seek work abroad, which leads to broken relationships, struggling children, and ongoing hardship. At Maria Naomi, we’re changing this story.
Through our artisan workshop, we provide dignified employment and practical skills, empowering women to build brighter futures while staying close to their families. At the same time, we share the life-changing hope of the Gospel through Bible studies, children’s programs, and community outreach. When you visit, you won’t just witness this mission—you’ll become part of it.
Over the years, volunteers from all walks of life—from World Race participants to church groups to families—have joined us. Together, we’re not just meeting immediate needs; we’re building a community rooted in God’s love and purpose.
